Police Patrol Officers perform general and specialized law enforcement work, which includes safeguarding the life, safety, and security of the Regent/CBN campus community through the delivery of a comprehensive and integrated program of security and law enforcement services in partnership with the community, local, state, and Public Safety agencies. Police Officers require strong ethical behavior, self-discipline, diplomacy, and human compassion.
Qualifications:
- 1 – 3 years’ experience working as an armed security or Police Patrol Officer preferred
- Ability to become a DCJS Certified Armed Security Officer and Sworn Police Officer
- Ability to respond, review, record, and investigate all incidents to determine any violations of law
- Ability to be qualified in the use of small firearms, patrol rifle, and shotgun
- Ability to be qualified in less lethal options such as: OC Spray, ASP baton, and a conducted electrical weapon (TASER)
- Ability to lead in emergency situations, possessing excellent problem-solving skills and be a quick thinker
- Ability to function at the highest level of confidentiality, discretion, discernment, and tact.
- Excellent communication/public relations skills
- Ability to interact with the public and outside contacts with tact and diplomacy
- Ability to speak clearly, hear, analyze, and react quickly to high-stress situations
- Ability to act independently with minimal supervision
- Ability to complete basic Communications Center training
- Ability to retain critical identifying information relating to wanted persons
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office, RMS, CAD, and other departmental software
- Submit to pre-employment drug screening and random urinalysis as directed
- Ability to stand for long periods of time, pursue and apprehend suspects on foot, as well as sit for extended periods of time
- Ability to work rotating shifts and holidays
- Valid driver’s license with a good driving record
- Associate’s Degree or equivalent administrative working experience preferred

Selection Process:
The Regent Police Patrol Officer selection process is a multi-tiered process. The selection process may include the following components: *Department Ride-Along *Written Test *Physical Ability Test *Background Investigation *Panel Interview *Health Physical *Psychological exam provided at the employer’s expense. Successful candidates must meet the Commonwealth of Virginia’s criteria for the issuance of a concealed handgun permit.
Special Requirements:
Employees must be able to work rotating shifts (days/evenings/midnights) including weekends and holidays and be available to work overtime when required to meet operational needs. This is a safety-sensitive position and is subject to random drug testing.
The following items are considered employment disqualifiers for this position:
Criminal History:
- Conviction, guilty plea, or no contest plea of any felony.
- Conviction, guilty plea, or no contest plea of any misdemeanor sex offense, including but not limited to sexual battery under Virginia Code §18.2-67.4 or consensual sexual intercourse with a minor 15 or older under clause (ii) of Virginia Code §18.2-371 or any crime requiring registration in the Virginia Sex Offender Registry.
- Conviction, guilty plea, or no contest plea of domestic assault under Virginia Code §18.2-57.2 or any offense that would be domestic assault under the laws of another state or the United States.
- Conviction, guilty plea, or no contest plea of any misdemeanor involving moral turpitude, including but not limited to petit larceny under Virginia Code §18.2-96 or any offense involving moral turpitude that would be a misdemeanor if committed in the Commonwealth.

Driving History:
- Any conviction, guilty plea, or no contest plea of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, refusal to take blood or breath test, eluding police, racing, or leaving the scene of an accident within the last 5 years.
Drugs:
- Sale of any drug listed in the drug standards and schedules set forth in Virginia Code §54.1-3443 et seq. without a valid license authorizing sale of specified drugs. Any other distribution will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
- Unlawful use or possession of any illegal drug, including but not limited to heroin, cocaine, hallucinogens, methamphetamine, etc. or any derivative thereof (except marijuana) within the last 5 years.
- Illegal use or possession of anabolic steroids within the last three (3) years.
- Illegal use or possession of marijuana or a derivative thereof within the previous twelve (12) months.
Other:
- Dishonorable discharge from any military service.
- Untruthfulness and/or the intentional withholding of information on any application, interview, or paperwork associated with the position. Examples of intentional withholding of information would include deliberate inaccuracies or incomplete statements.
- Intentional failure to follow the directions outlined in the testing process or relying on others to complete any portion of the testing process.
Additional Note: This position is eligible for a sign-on/hiring bonus after a completion of a probationary period.
The bonus is paid out as follows:
- After 90 days, employee will be paid a $250 bonus.
- After 1 year, employee will be paid a $250 bonus.
- After 3 years, employee will be paid a $300 bonus.
